Each January, some members of the orchestra do a live audition. Unlike other concerto competitions, rather than cash, the prize is being selected as a featured soloist on the Concerto Concert. Members auditioning work outside of their daily responsibilities for the orchestra to prepare a work and perform it live with piano accompaniment for a small committee. The competition always takes place during the evenings the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday after the December break. Auditions are closed (not open to public).
Winners are selected for both for performance quality and the playability of the accompaniment, which may play into the decisions for the program of any given year. Music choices can be a single movement of a concerto or a shorter complete work. Members of the orchestra may only win the competition two times. 10-12 minutes performance time or less is preferred.
Audition slots are 20 minutes and will open for sign ups in late November/early December. Performance time of audition pieces should be less than this allotted time. Students may want to consult the director early about music choices.
A copy of the accompaniment must be provided to the director on the second to last Friday before December break.
Accompaniment should include your name and the name of your accompanist. Indicate which movement you will be playing, if applicable.
Memorization is expected, as is playing with an accompanist.
Players must find out if their piece is in the library already, if it can be ordered or if it is a rental only. Rentals are particularly challenging and expensive. It is advisable to avoid pieces which can only be rented. Luck's Music Library is a good place to start to see if your desired selection is available for purchase or only rented.
Winners who have a rental piece must pay the rental fee and shipping costs.
Some years the concerto concert falls on the same day as State and DECA competition. If you audition, it is expected that you will commit to the performance if you are selected as a soloist.
